Archbishop of Vilnius Gintaras Grušas: Mercy is not an Abstract Concept but a Lived Reality

Why will the Sixth World Apostolic Congress on Mercy take place specifically in Vilnius? What unique gifts does Divine Mercy bring to this city, its people, and the whole world? How does the message of mercy inspire and uplift all who encounter it?

These questions are openly reflected upon by the host of the upcoming congress, Archbishop of Vilnius Gintaras Grušas.

What image or memory first comes to mind when you hear the word „mercy”?

Several images come immediately to mind: the Divine Mercy image itself, with Christ’s Heart open and rays of blood and water flowing forth; the merciful father who runs to embrace the prodigal son; and the Good Samaritan who crosses boundaries to care for the wounded stranger.

Mercy is God’s love poured out for us and in us. It is not an abstract concept but a lived reality, encountered in a privileged way through the sacraments – especially the Eucharist and Reconciliation – where Christ gives Himself to heal, restore, and transform us.  It is the experience of God’s love and the understanding that in serving our neighbor we are serving the Lord  – what propels us to works of mercy.
